Obituary for Fr. Nick Rahoy, by Fr. Ken Urumolug
Brothers and Sisters,
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of our brother priest, Fr, Nick. He passed at about 8:20pm Yap time yesterday, Wednesday June 1st, at Yap Hospital. Bishop Julio was able to visit with Fr. Nick that evening. Bishop Julio called me after his visit to say how happy he was for the change to visit Fr. Nick. He prayed with him in Chuukese which Fr. Nick seemed to appreciate. Bishop Julio was also impressed with the turn out of so many Yapese at Yap Hospital, keeping vigil, praying, and taking turns in caring for Fr. Nick. The Bishop went to the priests' house to settle in, and they were all called back to the hospital as Fr NIck was going down. The priests called me from the hospital with the sad news of Fr. Nick's praying.
Fr Nick was born on July 1, 1943 and was ordained a priest on May 28, 1977. Fr Kelly celebrated mass at his bedside for his 45 years anniversary. He has three brothers and two sisters.
Fr. Nick graduated from Xavier High School in Chuuk and did his seminary studies at San Jose Seminary in the Philippines. He did pastoral ministry in both Yap and Chuuk and worked for Bishop Amando in the Chancery office of our Diocese. He had also been Episcopal Vicar for Yap and Chuuk. Fr. Nick was a great mentor to many of us priests in the diocese, and was just a good friend. Thank you Fr Nick for the gift of yourself, to us and especially to the church.
Funeral arrangements will be sent out tomorrow. In the meantime, let us hold each other in prayer as we remember our brother Fr. Nick. He will most likely be buried, according to his wishes, on Ulithi Island, Yap State.
Best Wishes,
Fr. Ken Urumolug
